About Peceful Hearts Dolls
one heart at a time for peace on earth

A True Story....

Once upon a time, a long time ago, in a place not so very far from here, a little girl made her first doll when she was nine years old. Suzy named her doll “Katrina” and loved her a great deal and took good care of her.

From then on, and for many years, Suzy sewed. She made more dolls, stuffed toys for her friends, costumes, and lots of clothes – first for her dolls, and then for herself. As she grew up she made more grown up things: bridesmaids’ dresses, wedding dresses, business suits, baby quilts, and things for her home. She loved to sew and her friends were happy because gifts aplenty came from her sewing machine. Life was good.

But someplace along the way Suzy, who was by now very grown up, lost touch with sewing and made nothing for a long time……until the tragic events of September 11. Suddenly fear and hatred were everywhere. Once good people turned bad and looked with suspicion at their neighbors. Bad people grew worse. Lies were told and terror ruled the people’s hearts as war spread. Friends and nations were pitted against each other about what to do. A great sadness hung over the world like a dark cloud. Peace on earth seemed impossible.

Then Suzy decided to sew again. She made a doll, and inside the doll was a little heart with a message that called for peace. It said “When my heart is at peace the world is at peace.” She chose this message, an old Chinese proverb, because it is pro-peace rather than anti-war. It conveys what she believes, that in those moments, no matter how brief, when your heart is truly at peace the feeling ripples out and touches others who may feel peaceful, too.

She gave the doll away and made two more. This time she translated the message into different languages, because why should peace belong to only a select few who speak the same language? And she gave those dolls to people who believed in peace and spoke out about it in very public ways. Soon she was making many dolls, using different languages. The dolls pleased the people, and those who gave or received one felt peaceful and filled with a ray of hope that peace would once again be there for everyone. One doll at a time, one heart at a time, one moment at a time, peace seemed possible.

And thus Peaceful Hearts Dolls came to be.
